Governance and Human Rights Association (GOHURA) is an association of like-minded South Sudanese formed in May 2015 to advance and respond to issues of Governance, and Human Rights in South Sudan.
The issue of governance and human rights is now believed to be mutually reinforcing. As known widely in South Sudan, and also internationally. Human rights principles provide a set of values to guide the work of Governments and other political and social actors. They also provide a set of performance standards against which these actors can be held accountable. Moreover, human rights principles inform the content of good governance efforts: they may inform the development of legislative frameworks, policies, programmes, budgetary allocations and other measures. Engaging in these areas will provide an over-arching framework for sustainable development in South Sudan and also contribute to other mechanism which increase the wellbeing of vulnerable peoples and empower them to gain freedom from political poverty.
It is in this interest that GOHURA would like to direct its efforts into the emergence of active, informed citizens and effective state which enhance the promotion and protection of human rights in the country. Promoting and protecting human rights harness good governance paradigms as they are linked to development which South Sudan desperately needs. As it has been established the consistent denial of rights often fuels conflict and a lack of accountability and insufficient respect for human rights closes off avenues for individual opportunity and thus contributes to poverty.
